Distributors insist on this specific format in order to produce high quality multi-format eBooks readable on any device, including the Kindle, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble nook, personal computers and various mobile phones and mobile e-reading apps.
An eBook is not a printed book. With printed material you control the layout. With e-reading devices the customer control what your book looks like. If you want your work to display well it is extremely important that a manuscript is properly formatted for digital publishing.
